This is the ultimate lymphatic system mover! Poke is one of those wonderful old medicines that helps with many ailments. Because it stimulates glandular action, it is helpful for relieving swollen glands, goiter, enlarged thyroid glands, mastitis, lymphadenitis, chronic rheumatism, and mumps. It is also anti-inflammatory and improves the immune system. Poke root has constituents that are now being researched to establish its effects on lymphocytic cells of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), and certain types of cancer.
 
To briefly go over one of our favorite plants God gave us, the young leaves can be eaten (prepared correctly) as poke salat, the berries are another strong medicine useful for intense joint pain like rheumatoid arthritis (frozen berries swallowed whole, consult a trusted naturopath/herbalist for preparation), and the roots are a powerhouse for getting things moving in your lymphatic system (we use the root in our Lymph Relief Salve)! We harvest the roots only in late winter since this is the best time due to all the plants energy being in the roots instead of shooting back up for new growth in spring, so once it's gone, it won't be restocked until next year.
 
Contraindications: Great care should be taken with the use of this herb since it is very potent in its actions. It should be used only in small amounts. Taken in large doses, Pokeweed has narcotic properties and slows cardiac contraction, reduces the force of the pulse, decreases respiratory activity and acts to paralyze the central nervous system. It can cause prolonged vomiting, muscle spasms, convulsions, and gastrointestinal irritation is an indication of toxicity, and usage should be stopped immediately.
